Every solver on this site runs inside your browser. No cube state is uploaded, no account exists, and nothing here needs a network connection once the page has loaded. This page says exactly what each solver does, so you can judge whether to trust its answers.

How the answers are checked

A solver that returns a plausible-looking string is worthless, so nothing here is trusted on the strength of looking right:

  • Every 3×3 solution is applied back to the input cube inside the solver and rejected if the result is not solved. A wrong answer cannot leave the function.
  • The cube model is built twice, independently. The face turns in the facelet layer are hand-derived cycles; the same turns are also derived from 3D geometry by rotating sticker coordinates. The test suite asserts the two constructions agree exactly.
  • Every algorithm published on this site is executed against that model and checked against the property its description claims. Doing that turned up four sequences that were wrong.
  • The worked examples rendered on each page before any JavaScript runs are checked too — the tests apply each published solution to its published cube and assert it solves.

Privacy, briefly

The colours you enter never leave your device. There is no cube-state API, no logging and no account. The timerkeeps your session in your own browser’s local storage, which means clearing site data clears your times and they will not follow you to another device. Full detail on the privacy page.

Credits

The two-phase algorithm is Herbert Kociemba’s, published in 1992. The proof that twenty moves always suffice is Rokicki, Kociemba, Davidson and Dethridge, 2010.
